Sports shocked as Poundbury progress
WEYMOUTH SPORTS 0 POUNDBURY ROVERS 1
A BELOW-PAR performance saw Weymouth Sports dumped out of the Dorset Senior Trophy by lower-league Poundbury Rovers.
The Dorset League Division One outfit showed more commitment throughout and thoroughly deser-ved their victory, much to the disappointment of Chris Hicks, whose side were a major let down.
The joint-manager said: “We just did not get going. We were lacklustre and it was just a half-hearted performance really.
“Consistency has been our main problem since the start of the season and this display was in stark contrast to the one at Sturminster Newton United the previous weekend.
“It’s very frustrating but all we can do is work on it and try and get our heads right.”
Analysing the second round tie in more depth, Hicks went on to add: “No one played well, me included. In the first half we were dreadful and very lucky to come in at half-time still on level terms.
“We were then marginally better in the second half but it certainly wasn’t anything to shout about.
“A bit of a mistake at the back involving a misguided header then handed Poundbury a deserved lead but still there was no reaction.
“We didn’t even create any real chances until five minutes from the end when Sam Culpin put a header against the crossbar.
“He was very unfortunate not to see it go in but to be honest we didn’t deserve anything as they wanted it a lot more.”
Sports will return to Dorset Senior League action on Saturday when they are set to host Gillingham Town Reserves (2pm).
Sports: Parkes, Windust (Stroud 46), Bessant, Schofield, Hicks, Thomas (Green 46), W Sonner (Taylor 70), Walker, Dixon, Culpin, M Sonner.
