A FORMER European Cup winner has confirmed his interest in the vacant hot-seat at the Bob Lucas Stadium.

Former Leeds United and Nottingham Forest left-back Frank Gray believes he can help take the Terras back up the non-League pyramid and is due to apply for the role in the next couple of days.

In an exclusive interview with Echosport, the 59-year-old said: “I have been about managing at this level and above for some time.

“I’ve had a break since leaving Bashley and now I want to get back into it.

“There is a lot of potential at Weymouth. It is a club that has played at a higher level and there is no reason why it cannot get back there.

“I faced them last season when I was at Bashley and, having been around this standard for a while, I know a lot of the lads there.

“They have a strong enough squad for the league and it is just about getting the best out of the players.”

Gray, now 59, played alongside his brother Eddie at Leeds and went on to enjoy a fantastic career, becoming the first-ever player to reach the final of the European Cup for two different English clubs.

Defeat to Bayern Munich with the Whites in 1975 was followed by a fantastic triumph over Hamburg with Forest in 1980 before moves to Sunderland and Darlington followed in the mid-to-late eighties.

He also made a total of 32 appearances for the Scotland national team and, after his playing career, carried all that experience into management.

Following a short stint at the helm of the Quakers in the early nineties, Gray took over at the helm of Farnborough Town in 2005 before moving on to Grays Athletic, Woking, Basingstoke Town and, more recently, the Bash, who he left earlier this year.
