TERRAS: Matthews up for Argyle tester
JASON Matthews is preparing his Terras’ troops for their toughest pre-season test as League Two outfit Plymouth Argyle head to the Bob Lucas Stadium tomorrow (3pm).
Weymouth have been in hot scoring form during an unbeaten run of friendlies so far, netting 14 goals in three games against lower level opposition.
But at the business end of his preparations, Matthews is chomping at the bit to test his new group against the Pilgrims, who netted five goals against Tavistock on Tuesday evening.
“I am looking forward to it, it will be a good test for us to see what we are about.” Matthews told Echosport.
“We have played well in the last few games, even though the clubs we have played are lower league clubs than us, we showed our class. Now we are at the other end of the spectrum we have to test our wits against a side that are higher.
“I would like to give a massive thanks to Plymouth, we have built a good relationship with them now.
“They gave us two loan players and were a massive help to me in my first season as a manager, I would also like to thank them for agreeing to bring their first team to the Bob Lucas.”
Looking forward to competitive action, Matthews also commented on the toughness of Weymouth’s opening Southern Premier League contests, starting with a home encounter against Hungerford Town on August 9.
He added: “There are some really tough fixtures and I couldn’t pick out and easy one in there, but it gives us that chance to test ourselves.
“I have asked the fans to judge me on those first ten games and I feel that they will have a massive say so over the course of the season, and we will then know where we are.”
