WEYMOUTH 121-4* (19pts) beat STALBRIDGE 184 (5pts) by 6 wickets *revised target 120

KIERON Womble produced a priceless skipper’s knock to see the Seasiders home by six wickets at Redlands.

Having opened the batting with wicketkeeper Jim Ryall, the Wey-mouth captain produced a solid innings of 57 to steer his side to victory, and put right his indifferent performance at league leaders Poole last time out.

“I played a really poor shot last week to get out when we were in trouble so it was pleasing this week when we were up against it to see us home,” he told Echosport.

“It was a good win again, the Poole game was a very different story and I think everyone wanted to come back this week and wanted to do it, so it’s pleasing.”

Bowling first on a rain-interrupted day at Redlands, Wom-ble’s men bowled Stalbridge out for 184, and because of the rain, were set a reduced target of 120 to chase off 25 overs, which they knocked off with relative ease.

Womble added: “We bowled fantastically at the top again, Dan Hutchens, Harry Tucker and Dave Trotter with the ball were superb as well as the rest of the bowlers.

“We treated it like a bit of an evening league game in the end, it was a little bit disappointing to chase 120 off 25 overs considering they got 184 off 50, but that’s the way the scoring system goes and, in the end, we got there comfortably, so it’s happy days.”

The victory puts the Seasiders in the box seat to book their place in the top four of the division when the league splits in two weeks.

And although that is still his side’s main aim, Womble is not ruling out a challenge for the title.

The skipper claimed: “It is a very tight league, they (Stal-bridge) were sixth before the game and only around 20 points off top. The top four is still our main focus, but if we get there than I think we could do it.”
