TERRAS’ fans received the news they had been craving for weeks prior to their side’s 3-1 win over Torquay United tonight, with midfielder Chris McPhee putting pen to paper to re-sign for the club on a one-year deal.

The former Salisbury City man has been an integral part of Weymouth’s friendly fixtures this summer and has scored goals against Guernsey and the Royal Marines Representative XI.

He was given a great ovation from the home crowd when signing his contract, but there was no happier man at the Bob Lucas Stadium than player-manager Jason Matthews.

The elated boss told Echosport: “I am really pleased. That should complete our squad and we have a very good spine of the team now.

“Hopefully we can all stay fit and we can have a good season.

“It would not have happened without the fans and without Ian White with the Wessex Fantasy Football. They made that happen and we are very pleased to have Chris and his experience.

“I will have him as my player-coach and it’s great because he has done all pre-season with us, and it would have been sad to have lost him over money.”

As well as good news off the pitch for the Terras, it was certainly good news on it when they took the lead against the Gulls on 41 minutes in fairly bizarre circumstances.

Goalkeeper Jordan Seabright raced off his line to pick up a through ball but was adjudged to have gathered it just outside his area.

From the resulting free-kick, the ball was laid off to defender Ed Palmer and he drilled a shot into the bottom corner of Seabright’s net, giving the hosts a 1-0 advantage at the break.

The Terras were then stunned by a moment of brilliance from Torquay’s Louis Briscoe who displayed superb technique to strike a 25-yard volley past Matthews in the Weymouth goal.

But the home side showed great character and midfielder George Rigg slotted home twice within four minutes as the Terras ran out 3-1 victors.

Commenting on the game, Matthews added: “It was another good workout tonight against a very good Torquay side, it was very pleasing."
