DORCHESTER TOWN 0 YEOVIL TOWN 9

DORCHESTER Town only just managed to avoid another double-figure pre-season defeat at the Avenue last night, as James Hayter and Sam Hoskins both hit hat-tricks in a 9-0 win for the rampant Glovers.

Gary Johnson’s men showed their class throughout and at one stage it looked like they could match the 11 that Bournemouth put past Dorchester last month.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Magpies’ boss Phil Simkin is now mulling over the idea of playing five across the back when his side begin their Southern Premier League campaign at Arlesey Town on Saturday.

Speaking afterwards, Simkin said that, like the Bournemouth fixture, taking up the offer of playing a team like Yeovil was always difficult to turn down from a financial point of view.

“In my heart of hearts, I knew what was going to happen tonight, but I can’t turn around and not play it because we were going to be hammered,” he said.

“That has made us a lot of money tonight.

“I thought at times we actually played some decent stuff, it’s just we couldn’t defend the counter-attack and they had too much pace for us.

“Their two wide players were excellent but some of the goals were self-inflicted.”

Looking at the trip to Arlesey, he added: “We’ve got to get through the first two games defensively, and we might even go to a five (at the back) on Saturday.”

With Nathan and Steve Walker unavailable, Oakley Hanger and Nathan Peprah-Annan formed Dorchester’s centre-back pairing.

Peprah-Annan nearly opened the scoring at the wrong end 15 minutes in when he deflected a Hoskins effort on to his own post.

But the visitors did have the ball in the Magpies’ net not long after, Seth Twumasi blasting a fierce drive past Alan Walker-Harris from outside the box.

Yeovil doubled their advantage on 36 minutes, defender Matteo Lanzoni beating Walker-Harris to a James Berrett free-kick and heading into an unguarded net.

It was 3-0 four minutes later when Hayter converted from the penalty spot after Hoskins went down under a challenge from stand-in Dorchester captain Jake Smeeton.

Hayter grabbed his second and the League One outfit’s fourth with a cool finish on 51 minutes, and Hoskins smashed in a fifth from close range soon after.

Five became six in the 58th minute, Hayter making the most of a woefully short pass back by substitute Ryan Woodford to slide the ball past Walker-Harris for his hat-trick.

Walker-Harris then produced a superb save from Berrett, only for Hoskins to make it 7-0 with an easy tap in – that made it four goals in 11 minutes for the Glovers.

The impressive Hoskins completed his hat-trick 10 minutes from the end and there was enough time for substitute Sam Foley to slide in a ninth.

Yeovil keeper Chris Weale was virtually a spectator for the entire game.
