WEYMOUTH cannot afford to slip up at Burnham if they want to stay in touch with league leaders Poole Town, according to player-manager Jason Matthews.

The Terras return to the scene of their midweek FA Trophy triumph tomorrow (3pm) for a third meeting with the Buckinghamshire outfit in the space of eight days.

And with Poole the visitors to the Bob Lucas Stadium next Tuesday, Matthews is eager for his side to keep their momentum going at The Gore – they currently sit nine points behind the table-topping Dolphins.

Despite their lowly position in the Evo-Stik Premier Division, Burnham have proved tough nuts to crack in the games between the teams over the last week.

Tomorrow’s clash will be the first for the hosts in the league this month, though they did win their two previous outings against Dunstable and Frome.

But the Terras are in good form themselves having only lost twice in their last 15 in all competitions.

“It wasn’t one of our greatest trips on Tuesday,” said Matthews. “The game was pretty dire but it was just about getting through.

“Obviously we gave ourselves a bit of a lift before going back there tomorrow and winning there in midweek gives us a slight edge psychologically.

“We learned some things about them over the two games, one being that they are very hard to beat.

“We know they will come at us hard from the start on a pitch that can be really heavy when it’s wet.

“They have got a few good players and a big lad up front who they play to.”

He went on to add: “We can look at the Poole game but Burnham is the important one first and foremost.

“We want to stay within touching distance of Poole, so it would be no good for us to lose tomorrow.”

Matthews is without Calvin Brooks for the game due to a family bereavement, but Luke Winsper, Callum Laird and Chris McPhee are all in line to return to the squad.

“I will probably bring Callum and Luke back to give the squad a fresh impetus,” said Matthews.

“It’s a massive boost if Chris is back because we’ve missed him in the last two games.

“He is a big voice on the pitch and we have probably missed that.

“It was good to get Tim Sills through the game on Tuesday.

“He led the line very well and he takes some of the pressure off Stewart Yetton.”
