WEYMOUTH Golf Club held the first ever Junior Pro-Am where all the youngsters were treated to a great day’s golf.

Club professional Michael Watson, who recently qualified for the British PGA Cup Team, led the way for the professionals with a three under par score of 67, despite losing a ball on the seventh hole.

Watson’s team of Jake Kerslake, Sam Trott and Jacob Tidswell, all from Weymouth Golf Club, finished third behind Ferndown and the eventual winners, the Dorset Birdie Squad.

Ben Christey-Clover’s team of three girls – Molly Kington, Hermione Christey-Clover and Lily Horn – blew the rest of the teams away with some amazing girl power to win by 10 points in this Stableford format.

Christey-Clover, who runs his Golf Academy in Salisbury, was impressed as the girls opened up with two birdies on the first hole and continued to average over five points per hole with their two counting scores.

Organiser Des Lochrie said “The time involved with putting this event together was well worth it to see so many youngsters have so much fun outdoors on the golf course.

“I would like to thank Michael Mayock from Mackoys Ltd who kindly sponsored the event, which made all the difference to holding such a successful event.”

Barry Sandry the PGA’s South West Regional captain travelled down from Swindon to take part in this unique event and was impressed by the attitude and commitment of all the juniors who took part and said they were a credit to the clubs they belonged to as he spoke to the clubhouse full of proud parents.

He also said that he would like to encourage more youngsters to take the game up through various indicatives incentives throughout the country.
