JORDAN Copp admits he is eager to get started with the Terras’ pre-season schedule and reflected on his spell as a trialist with Weymouth last summer.

The former Plymouth Argyle youngster, who is set to return to pre-season with the club this week, is glad he made the journey to try out for the Terras 12 months ago but admitted it was an experience that put him out of his comfort zone.

“It was a strange one last season. I had never been anywhere as a trialist so it was a different experience,” he told Echosport.

“I didn’t like it much to be honest, when I turned up there were probably six or seven other trialists there as well.

“Looking from the outside I thought ‘oh no, there are six or seven of us here fighting for a couple of spots, am I wasting my time coming up here?’

“But I obviously did something right to force my way in and did well enough last season to be offered another deal this year.

“It was a good challenge because it was something I hadn’t experienced before. I enjoyed it eventually but turning up on the first session I was a bit nervy.”

Giving his thoughts on preseason this time around, he added: “I am quite looking forward to it, I don’t think it is going to be just like the normal running.

“It will be interesting to see what Sillsy (Tim Sills) and Macca (Chris McPhee) have in store because they are quite young coaches and they are very knowledgeable in different ways.”

“I think there will be a lot of ball work as well but it’s all the little things that go with it. We will get new training kit and all that type of stuff which is nice in the first couple of weeks.”

The return of defender Jake Wannell to the Weymouth ranks is likely to provide Copp, who mainly featured at left-back in his first season with the club, with a tough contest for a starting berth.

The 21-year-old, who can also offer manager Jason Matthews a midfield option, added: “It will be good competition and it looks like we will have good competition all around the squad.

“You want to be in that team consistently week in week out.”

Copp also sang the praises of new defender Mark Cooper, who he played alongside during a short spell with Frome Town.

“It will be nice to get all the boys back together and I know a couple of the new lads already. Jason has signed some good players,” he added.

“I played briefly with Coops when I played for Frome when I got released by Plymouth. I went there for a couple of games and he was there then.

“He is a good player. He’s versatile and can play in quite a few different positions like myself.

“He will fit in well with the squad, is a good lad and it will be good to see him.”
