DORCHESTER Town will look to do what the England rugby team couldn’t when they face Welsh opponents of their own tonight (7.45pm).

The Magpies host newly-promoted Merthyr Town in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division 72 hours after Wales’ epic World Cup victory at Twickenham.

Boss Mark Jermyn’s county town squad had the chance to recharge their batteries last weekend following their FA Cup exit to Cirencester, and recent form suggests they go into this evening’s game as favourites.

Merthyr, also without a fixture on Saturday, have picked up just one point from the last 12 on offer compared to 10 for Dorchester.

“Looking at Merthyr’s form of late, they have one point out of their last four league games and were knocked out of the cup,” said Jermyn.

“Obviously they are struggling a little bit with confidence at the moment so will be looking to get a positive result against us.

“It has been a long time since we have played them and I may speak to someone who has already played them to find out a bit about them.

“But week in, week out I want to look at what we are doing before worrying about the opposition.”

He added: “I’ve been pleased with how we’ve done in our first 10 games.

“We find ourselves in a position where we are quite comfortable at the moment, and if we can get some more points tonight then we will move further up the table.

“We’ve got to be aware we’ve got a really busy October coming up and I felt it was important we gave the players a rest over the weekend.

“It’s not often you get a chance during the season to do that and with a small squad the last thing we want to do is wear them out.”

Striker Tony Lee is back in contention for a placed in the Magpies’ starting line-up and defender Chris Dillon is Jermyn’s only real injury concern as he continued his comeback from a groin problem.
