CHICKERELL United start their defence of the Dorset Senior Trophy tomorrow with a first round clash at Verwood Town Reserves (2.30pm).

The Chickens became champions after they defeated Bridport Reserves on penalties in last season’s finale at the County Ground.

But with a number of different teams entering the revamped competition this season, Stalls’ supremo Steve Coward insists his side will have to be at their best to relive last term’s glory.

Reflecting on last season’s triumph, he told Echosport: “It was one of the biggest moments the club has had.

“Being part of it was brilliant but this is a different year and different season.

“I think it will be a tough one this year because there are a lot more sides from the DPL and higher up.

“But with our full strength squad I think we can compete with anyone anyway. We just need to get that first win in the cup and get that momentum going in the side.

“If we can get a good cup run going it gives you a bonus. It keeps the season going if you have a good run as well.”

Coward is unable to take charge for tomorrow’s encounter meaning his assistants will step up to the plate.

Jamie Rawlings may also be missing from the squad but Joe Charles and Joel Protheroe are available.

Meanwhile, Portland United Reserves entertain Hamworthy Recreation (2.30pm).

Looking ahead to the game, island manager Justin Faulkner said: “This will be a really stern test, you may even call it impossible.

“We're struggling for form and trying to find some consistency going up against a side like Ham Rec, who have only lost one game in the DPL this season and are expected to be right up there again.”

He added: “We will be forced to shuffle the pack again due to unavailability.

“I do know I will get 100% out of this team and they will keep working to the final whistle. Who knows what could happen on the day though, it’s 11 against 11.”

Elsewhere in the competition, Dorset Premier League leaders Balti Sports face a trip to Bournemouth League outfit Allendale and Weymouth Reserves travel to Alderholt.

Last year’s runners-up Bridport Reserves make the trip to Blandford United, while Dorchester Sports host Dorchester Town Reserves.

Lyme Regis are also on their travels in the first round, they visit Sherborne Town Reserves (2.30pm).
