ALL three divisions are represented in the semi-finals of this season’s Handicap Cup after this week’s last-eight ties.

Colliton X secured their place in the next round with a 6-3 win over fellow Division One side Wyke A.

Sai Maganti gave Wyke a great start with a straight-sets win over in-form Andy Crouch having had to overcome a 9-0 handicap in the first-to-21 best-of-three-set match.

Raj Lehal, Tony Loveridge and Crouch then took the next three legs to give Colliton a 3-1 lead.

Steve White pulled a leg back for Wyke by beating Lehal in three very close sets, taking the decider 21-19.

Maganti was unable to overcome a seven-point deficit against Loveridge, eventually going down 21-15 in the third.

White needed to beat Crouch to keep Wyke’s hopes alive but the eight-point start he had to give Crouch was too much and he too went down 21-15 in the third, giving Colliton an unassailable 5-2 lead.

Lehal extended the lead to 6-2 with a three-set win over Maganti before Steve Beauchamp claimed a consolation leg over Loveridge.

All Saints are the Division Two representatives in the semi-finals after beating Division Three opponents Colliton C 6-3.

The youngsters won this match by taking the first five legs, despite having to overcome small handicaps in all but one of them.

Luke Dadds got them off to a good start in overturning a five-point handicap to beat Peter Loakes in three sets.

He then went on to win his two other matches, as did Loakes.

Ben Hannigan and Hector Knight backed Dadds up well by beating Andy Ray and Katherine Bundy respectively in straight sets to put them 3-0 up, before Dadds’ win over Ray put them on the brink of victory.

The decisive leg was also the closest with Hannigan giving Bundy an eight-point start.

When Bundy levelled the leg by taking the second set Colliton saw a glimmer of hope, but Hannigan sneaked the decider 21-19 to give All Saints a 5-0 lead.

To their credit, Colliton took three of the last four legs but the tie was long gone by then.

The second Division One side through to the last four is Budmouth B after they won a 5-4 thriller against Division Two opponents Preston A.

Moses Lewis started 12-0 down against Stan Smith in the opening leg of the match but won a tough three-setter to give Budmouth an early advantage.

James Green then beat Derrick Shilliday in straight sets to put them 2-0 up, before Alec Brown got Preston off the mark with a comfortable win over Brad Burroughs by the same score.

Lewis restored the two-leg advantage in another three-set marathon, this time over Shilliday.

The match was all-square again when Brown beat Green and then Smith saw off Burroughs.

Amazingly, Brown made his 10-point handicap pay in beating Lewis to put Colliton 4-3 up only for Green to defeat Smith after having to overcome the same initial handicap. This sent the match into a deciding leg.

Something had to give in this one with the two players yet to win on the night, Burroughs and Shilliday, facing off.

Burroughs had to give away seven points but made this up easily in the first set when taking it 21-9.

The second was much closer but Burroughs avoided a final-set decider by securing it 21-18 and sending Budmouth through 5-4.

The final quarter-final saw Division Three’s STEPS J overcome Budmouth C 5-4 in a match that saw Budmouth start 3-0 down due to a last-minute illness to Jamie Blair.

STEPS held their nerve despite a spirited fightback from Will Jolliffe and Ethan Gear to ensure their progression.

The league’s tournament takes place this Saturday afternoon.
