AARON Cook battled to a bronze medal at the European Taekwondo Championships in Switzerland on Saturday.

The Dorchester-born star, who competes for Moldova, had a tough day of competition that started with a narrow 4-3 points win over Nikolaos Tzellos.

This led to a quarter-final fight against Italian Roberto Botta and again it was a narrow bout.

Cook scored the only point of the contest as he earned a 1-0 points victory to give himself a path into the semi-finals.

However this proved to be his last victory as he was undone in the semi-final by Turkish athlete Yunus Sari.

It was his third close fight of the competition in the space of a few hours as he succumbed to a single-point defeat.

Despite the 1-0 loss Cook still left the European Championships with a bronze medal as the contest has no third-place bout.

Sari went on to lose the final 5-0 to Azerbaijan fighter Milad Beigi Harchegani.

Elsewhere, former British rival Lutalo Muhammad lost in the quarter-final to the eventual champion Beigi Harchegani 13-1.

Meanwhile there was success for other British athletes as Lauren Williams won a gold medal in Switzerland. She beat Turkey’s Nur Tatar 4-3 to win Great Britain’s second gold medal after Jade Jones’ win on Friday.
