ELLIOTT Stone set two personal bests on his way to winning the WPC European Championships in his junior weight category at Stoke-on-Trent.

Stone, from Weymouth, lifted 120kg in the bench press and 205kg in the squat, an achievement made all the more incredible as Stone’s weight category is 67.5kg.

Stone’s brother, Steve Varney, also took part in the event, and he finished a stunning second in his weight category.

After the competition, Stone told Echosport: “It wasn’t bad for our first year.

“This was my first international competition and it was brilliant.

“It was an awesome atmosphere and it was brilliantly laid-out.”

The 21-year-old has been power lifting with his brother since he was 17 and is always looking to catch up with Varney, who at 82kg, is the stronger man.

Stone explained: “I always have that drive to lift as much as him, but because I’m only light, it is tough.

“I know it’s quite an unrealistic goal, but I would like to catch up with him one day.”

“I love this constant progression. You are always seeing it and it is quite satisfying.”

He is hoping for more success on both the national and international stage in the coming months.

He added: “Hopefully I can take the British title in September and I want to go to the Worlds next year as I wasn’t able to go this year.

“I want to be the best that I can really.”
