WEYMOUTH WILDCATS 45

WEYMOUTH Wildcats kicked off their 2017 campaign with a thrilling tie at the Isle of Wight’s Bryn Williams Celebration meeting.

The Weymouth outfit, who are still on the lookout to secure a permanent home, made the trip to the island and came away with a share of the spoils.

In a meeting of many highlights for the Cats, one came early when reserve Kyle Bickley’s first National League team meeting of his young career resulted in a race win when he claimed heat two.

The sides traded blows throughout the evening but in the all-important heat 13, the Warriors gained a huge 5-1 giving them a four-point lead with two heats remaining.

But the Wildcats rallied and managed to gain a 5-1 in the in heat 14 thanks to Bickley and Tom Woolley, setting up a final-head shoot-out.

Weymouth’s Matt Williamson, who enjoyed a stellar evening for the visitors, took off and never looked back to seal a heat win for the Wildcats. But, with Woolley trailing at the back, the meeting was drawn 45 points apiece.

Weymouth co-promoter Martin Peters said: “It was a good meeting, swinging one way then the other.

“On the night a draw was the best outcome.”

Speaking on behalf of the Isle of Wight, Barry Bishop added: “The Wildcats were fantastic at the meeting and it was great to see many Wildcat supporters making the trip across the Solent to be here.

“This shows the interest in the club is rising and the support that James (Tresadern) and Martin are receiving is increasing.

“This all bodes well as they seek to bring this famous club back and if they continue with the hard work they are doing and Weymouth gets behind the team it will not be too far away.

“The Wildcats were a credit to Weymouth and their promotion on Thursday night and we look forward to viewing their continued success both on and off the track.”
