WELLWORTHY Indoor Bowls Club’s season came to a climax when the club’s finals took place over one dramatic weekend.

Club president June Gillespie had a very close match with Rita Wilks in the Ladies’ Singles final, coming from behind to win 21-20.

The Mens’ Pairs was also won in dramatic fashion, being concluded on a deciding end by club steward Nigel Apsey and Graham Parker after they tied the match 17-17 with Roy Burnett and Dave Hanger.

Less dramatically, Dave Hanger won the Men’s Singles final on a walkover.

Dave Hanger, Roy Burnett and Alan Goodwin had suffered a shock defeat two weeks earlier in the semi-finals of the Club Triples, after an amazing performance by novice trio Peter Beardsley, Carol Dixon and Mike Tidby.

The latter three had come back from losing one end 8-0 to win 13-10 overall to gain a place in the final.

This result has been the talk of the club ever since.

Experience told in the end however, as Colin Slade, John Samson and Apsey prevailed in the Club Triples final to defeat Beardsley, Dixon and Tidby 23-10.

Meanwhile, in the Mixed Pairs

final, Brian Hawker and June Gillespie defeated Beardsley and Dixon 19-16.

Beardsley, having made it to three finals in his first year of competition, was third-time lucky though when he beat Dave Clark 25-9 in the Novice Singles final.
