DORCHESTER Town manager Craig Laird has said there is no reason to celebrate after the club secured safety from relegation.

The Magpies drew 1-1 at Stratford Town, with the point being enough to stumble over the line, and also the boss was pleased with the result, he said he doesn’t want people to get carried away.

He said: “I’m really happy for the supporters, the board and everybody involved in the club, but I’m disappointed because Dorchester shouldn’t have been in this position, so there’s nothing to celebrate.

“We probably could have gone 1-0 up earlier in the game, and then it was a bit of a ding-dong affair. The goal came against the run of play but the game probably summed up our season.

“We’ve got to change our mind-set so that we aren’t conceding late goals. Other sides would have ground out a 1-0 win and got it sorted, but we’ve still got a soft underbelly.

“They showed a lot of courage and bravery, but there’s a lot still to work on.”

The Magpies’ boss also urged the club to do everything they can to ensure that his side doesn’t find themselves in this situation again next year.

He said: “My work starts now to sort out the team and the squad so they’re ready for next season.

“I know a club is never too good to go down, but we’ve got to learn the hard lessons of the last two or three years to make sure this doesn’t happen again.

“Everybody has to work hard to make sure we do the best we can for this football club.

“There are some difficult decisions to be made behind the scenes, but they have to be made with the club’s best interests in mind.”
