LEWIS Whyton expressed his immense pride in leading the Blues as captain this season, as Portland United are set to find out whether they will be Sydenhams Wessex League Premier Division champions tomorrow.

The island outfit recorded a dramatic last-gasp 2-1 victory over Bemerton Heath Harlequins on the final day of the season at Grove Corner – Ryan Mckechnie’s winner kept them in the hunt for the crown.

Portland remained two points behind current leaders Moneyfields after the final fixtures at the weekend, but a dramatic twist could await both sides.

Moneys have appealed against a charge for fielding a suspended player back in January – an FA hearing tomorrow will decide whether they will be docked three points.

Should they be charged, the Blues will be crowned champions at the first time of asking after winning Wessex Division One last term.

Asked what his emotions were at the final whistle on Saturday, Whyton told Echosport: “Relief. Whatever the outcome on Wednesday.

“I thought it was going to peter out to be a draw but Macca managed to get, I think it was his shin on it. I don’t think he knew a lot about it, to be honest! I was close to tears at the end and the celebrations were unbelievable.

“I have never known celebrations like it in all the 14 years I have been there.

“It is strange, you can’t celebrate as champions because they (Moneyfields) might not lose the points. We had a few drinks after the game and enjoyed ourselves but it’s just a big wait now to find out.”

He added: “My biggest achievement as a player has been to lead a side out like we have got. We cannot do anymore, we haven’t lost in the league since October.

“We knew we had to pretty much win every game over the last 15 games and we have just kept ourselves to ourselves. What will be will be – we tried to win every point possible.

“Our squad is unbelievable really. It’s a very solid squad and it’s the best squad I have been involved in without a doubt.”

The Wessex League have announced that the hearing over Moneyfields’ appeal will be held at the FA headquarters at Wembley Stadium at 11am tomorrow.

Whyton also wished to thank the club’s fans for their support throughout the whole campaign.
