STURMINSTER Newton’s Paul Skivington has been named as the Great Britain captain for the Simpson Cup this year.

Skivington, who lost a leg in a motorcycle crash 15 years ago, is to lead the team of injured servicemen and veterans against a team from the USA in the Ryder Cup-style golf tournament to be held at Royal Birkdale golf club In Southport.

The event, which runs from September 24-27, is in aid of the On Course Foundation which offers servicemen, women and veterans in both countries the opportunity to participate in golf, in order to help restore self-confidence and provide a sense of purpose after injury.

Speaking of how the charity helped him restore his confidence, Skivington said: “For five years didn’t do anything and thought my life was over.

I’ve got young kids and found myself talking in the past tense, and then I found golf.

“It’s changed my life. The ability to compete against anybody, has really put the fire back in my belly.”
