WEYMOUTH captain Simon Browne is confident that stand-in skipper Dean Janaway will “do his absolute best” when the Seasiders travel to Hamworthy Recreation in County Division One tomorrow (1.30pm).

Browne is unavailable for Weymouth this week and next due to his Portland United managerial commitments and will temporarily hand over the reins to the former captain.

He told Echosport: “Janners has done the job many times before and a lot more than I have. He’s somebody that I’ve leaned on in games this year and he’s given me advice.

“I’m sure he’ll do his absolute best to get the right result for the club. I’ll be following the games and I’m sure I’ll be popping along to Redlands to see what’s going on.”

With two consecutive poor batting displays leading to two losses, Browne is looking to return to winning ways against Hamworthy, who sit directly above Weymouth in sixth place.

“We were poor for the Bere Regis game. We bowled okay against the top of the league but we were beaten by the better side. That was much the same on Saturday and we were undone by some decent bowling.

“In terms of a losing streak it’s two on the bounce but I’m sure we’ll be going out to get the result. You can soon turn it around by winning a couple of games and the run is soon forgotten,” Browne said.

Positives for Weymouth in recent weeks have come in the shape of teenagers Dom Webb and Jack Sapsworth, whose bright form has not gone unnoticed by Browne.

He said: “Saps and Webby will hopefully be part of the club for a good few years. Saps has taken a few wickets at good times, he’s good to have in the field and he’s got a good pair of hands.

“Webby has always had bags of potential. That innings on Saturday will prove to himself that he can play at this level. It’s great to see Dom bat as well as he did.

“He texted me on Saturday saying “Any chance I can bat a bit higher?” I gave him that chance and he did well.

“There’s a few coming in from the seconds as well so we just need to keep the momentum going and put out competitive sides.”

Weymouth are set to be without Browne for the game, plus Tom England and Dave Blackman, who has a hamstring injury, however Kieron Womble may return.

Paul Collins comes back into the side, while Sami Rathnayake is also a possible inclusion.
