JAMIE Blair has been crowned the Weymouth & District League junior champion for 2017, winning the Rob Taylor Trophy.

A large entry of 20 players took part in a high quality competition at All Saints School.

The early stages saw four groups of five players play each other in a round-robin format and the top two players from each group qualified for the quarter-finals and the chance to win the main prize.

Blair played last year’s champion Will Jolliffe in the final and won the first leg 11-8.

Jolliffe fought back strongly in the next leg and had points to take the match into a decider, but Blair battled back to win 13-11.

Those players who were knocked out in the group stages played in consolation events.

In the consolation finals, Edith Dedman beat Ollie James, Richard Lane beat Ella Stanton and Sam Melhuish beat Jean Baker, the winners picking up consolation medals.

Margaret Taylor presented the trophies and medals and also an annual training bursary.

The majority of this year’s bursary is being used to help provide the Weymouth squad girls with extra training with top coach Rowden Fullen.
