SAM Roles was crowned club champion at Weymouth Golf Club with some great play over two days.

Luke Shaw led after a fine gross 73 on the Saturday, but could not continue his good form into Sunday.

This left the door open for Luke Bartlett and Roles to battle it out over the last few holes of the competition.

Roles birdied the 16th and then holed a 10-foot putt on the last. With Bartlett failing to hole his six-footer, he finished two shots behind Roles as he won his first Club Championship.

Shaw managed some compensation to win the “Drake Trophy” for the best 36-hole nett score, beating Dave Thomas by one and Perry Spicer by two.

Weymouth club captain Alan Bates produced his best round of the season to win the Seniors Scratch Championship and the Arthur Clarke Trophy with a gross 77 (nett 66).

Denise Duce also produced the goods to win both handicap and scratch events in the Ladies Championship, beating Dilys Grant by one shot.

Mark Rankin won the Junior Championship in his last year as a junior, with Jack Kerslake winning the handicap trophy.

Champion Roles also sealed success in the team event at Alan Bates’ captain’s day.

The new club champion guided his team of Lewis Knox, Luke Maddison and Andy Cogan to victory with 99 points helped massively with 13 points on the 16th hole.

Meanwhile, Bob Duce joined the hole-in-one club last Tuesday with an ace on the 10th hole to win the Fory Cup, with 38 points on a very wet and windy day

The next match was in the cup at home to Yeovil but again Weymouth lost that narrowly 3-2. The side’s match last week was at Parkstone and ended in a halved game overall.
