DORCHESTER club skipper Simon Mitchem believes the Dorset League should examine their current points structure over games left with no result.

Due to wet weather, only four league games were played across the entire county structure last Saturday, with each side being cancelled receiving five points as a consolation.

In the Dorset Funeral Plan Premier League, Swanage regained the lead at the top of the table having managed to get their game on.

They secured a comfortable victory over Wimborne & Colehill and sealed 19 points in the process.

That meant Dorchester, whose clash at fellow title-hopefuls Broadstone was called off due to the rain, were left kicking their heels and fell a further 14 points behind the Swans in the league standings.

Mitchem said: “I have aired my frustrations before about this five-point rule. Both teams try and get a game on and if they can’t, you get five points.

“We could play a game, get 13 points, and lose it.

“I think it’s something that definitely needs to be looked at. It’s extremely unfortunate but it is what it is. Until that happens we just have to suck it up and get on with it.”

Steve Clifford and Will McKay are set to come back into the Dorchester side that host Stalbridge at the Rec tomorrow (1pm).

And Mitchem, whose side are now 27 points adrift of top spot, knows the county town side need a sublime run of form to put themselves in contention for the title.

“We have six games left and there is still a lot to play for,” he added.

“We are still in with a chance, we just have to win all our games and rely on someone else to do us a favour.”
