FIFTEEN members of Leweston Pentathlon Academy took part in the National Modern Pentathlon Championships at Tudor Grange Leisure Centre in Solihull.

This was the most competitors that the club has sent to this type of event.

The sport consists of is fencing, horse riding, swimming and combined Laser shoot and run.

Those athletes that could not ride had the opportunity just to take part in a tetrathlon.

In the under-13 girls, Jessica Stevens had an excellent event to take silver and with team-mates Flora Spenlove-Brown (4th), Skye Fisher (5th) and Darcy Dryden (6th) took team gold.

In the under-15 girls, the club had the strongest age group with five girls in the age group.

Issy Colwell had a great competition to take gold with Elektra Covell (bronze), Lily Amor (7th), Sarah Carr (12th), Vivien Taylor (13th), and the team taking gold.

In the under-15 boys, Liam Openshaw was sixth and Ryan Openshaw 11th.

George Case bagged silver in the boys' under-19s, competing three years down and gaining selection for the GB team for World Championships.

In the under-17 girls, Coco Smythe was eighth and Amy Northam 14th, while in the under-19 girls, Libby Tolley claimed 13th.

This was the best result to date for the club at the national Pentathlon with eight competitors competing in the full Pentathlon, and the club being one of the top teams at the event and having one national champion Issy Colwell, and 2 team golds.

The main reason for the club success is the training that the athletes receive from Leweston School Pentathlon Academy with head coach Mick Flaherty and top coaches coming to Leweston to train the academy team, that are taking up the full Modern Pentathlon.

The athletes have to work hard for this type of event performing five different sports with different types of training.

The hard work is now showing some excellent results, and the club have more athletes on the English Talent Programme than any other club.
