CHIPPENHAM Town player-coach Jason Matthews has praised Weymouth for what he described as a “clinical” display in their 2-0 FA Cup second qualifying round win.

Goals either side of half-time from midfielder Charlie Davis and former Bluebird defender Mark Cooper helped settle the tie in the Terras’ favour on a soggy day at the Bob Lucas Stadium.

The former Weymouth manager, who moved to the National League South side in the summer, told Echosport that Mark Molesley’s side was “good value for their win”.

He said: “We had a lot of chances in the first half but Weymouth were more clinical.

“We took a throw inside their half and they scored from a break.

“That set the tone and the second goal was an individual error and we got punished for that.

“At 2-0 with the conditions drawing in I felt that Weymouth were good value for their win.

“Credit to them and all the best for the next round.”

Matthews, who is held in fond regard by the home faithful for his time at the club, was named on the visitors’ bench for the match but had mixed feelings about returning to the Bob Lucas, admitting it was time for him to move on.

He said: “It’s obviously a club that’s close to my heart.

“But it was time for me to move on and I’ve got to look at my new club and not my old one.”
