CATTISTOCK reported a remarkable double coincidence in the Read Woodruff Dorchester & District Evening League.

In both matches they batted first, scored exactly 144 runs and were then overhauled. Against Martinstown, Billy Wallbridge (51) and Steve Tucker (44) seemed to have set up a good score, but Martinstown won by seven wickets, with Ed Nichols contributing an unbeaten 41, Ross Stewart 33 and Jamie Stewart 44.

Jon Legg set Cattistock well on their way against St George’s until two run outs kept them to 144. Saints were struggling at 82-5 but Rob Coles’ rapid 39 saw them home by two wickets.

Martinstown were also successful in a close game with Plush. Several batsmen contributed to their score of 151-6, Sam Hennessy top-scoring with 36.

Ross Stewart with three wickets soon had Plush in trouble, but Pearce Mercer (48no) and Jonny Stuart (38no) produced a spirited recovery which ended just six runs short.

In the other Division One game reported, Bere Regis lost by seven wickets to Puddletown, thanks to 61 from skipper Lucas Allen.

Division Two saw Cosmos fall to two heavy defeats. Firstly, they were bowled out for 66 against Charlton Down, who spread the wickets around their bowlers leaving Nick Voss’ unbeaten 37 to lead Down home.

Things were no better for Cosmos against Hazelbury Bryan as M Lewis (3-7) and C Haynes (2-6) shot them out for 69. Haynes with 46 not out then led Hazelbury to a comprehensive 10-wicket win.

Division Three saw some tight bowling in the game between Dorchester Casuals and Winfrith. After Winfrith’s M Upshall conceded only 10 runs in his three overs, Casuals relied on late runs from Josh Foot (29) and Richard Jenkins (26no) to reach 105- 6.

Winfrith were unable to score against Dave Trotter who gave away only 10 runs from four overs and Will Channon, six runs from his three, meaning Casuals won by 26 runs.

Casuals were also successful against Puddletown RFC. Jack Walklett starred with the ball, taking 4-21 as Jim Ross’ 43 allowed RFC to post 105-6.

The 106 target proved no problem for Casuals as Rhys Cole’s 32 and James Dunham’s 48 not out led them home by nine wickets.

The line-up for the first Doug Read Cup semi-final was confirmed when Hazelbury Bryan beat RFC to set up a game against St. George’s.

Bere Regis continue to lead in Division One, while Dewlish and Dorchester Casuals lead Divisions Two and Three respectively.
