WEYMOUTH’S Michael Watson has been crowned the PGA’s number one player at the Srixon PGA Play-Offs at Little Aston.

The Wessex Golf Centre professional produced an array of golfing fireworks, sinking six birdies in the final seven holes for a seven-under-par 65 to win the tournament and open the door to the European Tour.

Watson, who also won £2,000, can now look forward to taking on some of Europe’s best players after his victory in the West Midlands as he secured invites to the BMW PGA Champion-ship, The European Open, Welsh Open and Scottish Open and a handful of Challenge Tour events.

Following his win Watson said: “I can’t believe it really. I knew I had to go low to stand any chance and after 11 holes I said to my playing partner John Wells we’ll have to blitz from now and suddenly I had five birdies in a row and one at the last.

“I still had a long wait and when Neil Cheetham birdied 17 I knew he could birdie the last so it was horrible waiting.

“But this is fantastic and the best thing I’ve done as an individual in my PGA career. But this is something else on the national stage and against the calibre of players that have been here this week.

“You know you’ve achieved something pretty special to beat them.

“Now I’ve got to reschedule my diary. I last played Wentworth in 2000 and I can’t wait as it’s the biggest and best event on the European Tour.

“Scotland will be nice and Wales I’ve played before and then there’s the European Open so I cannot wait.”

Cheetham finished second, with four players tied in third, led by Craig Shave (Whetstone) who fired a brilliant 65.

Ireland’s John Kelly (St Margaret’s) came through the pack with a fine 66 to sit alongside David Higgins (Waterville) and Andrew Raitt who had rounds of 71 and 70 respectively.
