Vickers in bid to get deals done

ASHLEY Vickers is hopeful that the Magpies’ leading lights will commit their future to the club after he was put in permanent charge at the weekend.

Boss Vickers has been handed the reins on a permanent basis, 16 weeks after initially being named caretaker-manager, and is confident that the likes of Ryan Moss and Kyle Critchell, who delayed signing a new deal until Vickers’ future was made clearer, will now put pen to paper.

He said: “I hope they will all sign and I would certainly like to think they will sign. They are players that provide a good spine to the team and I’m confident the lads want to achieve something here.”

James Coutts and Nathan Walker have also been rewarded with contracts for next year, but they too are yet to sign on the dotted line.

Meanwhile, having bolstered his ranks last week with the capture of ex-Terras Scott Brice and Josh Llewellyn, Vickers has been forced to trim his squad as a result.

The first casualty is striker Jules Emati-Emati, who scored one goal in 10 appearances after moving to the county town outfit in December.

Vickers added: “Jules has done well at the club but we have to work to our budget. I would love to keep Jules as he conducts himself fantastically, but we can’t unfortunately.

“It’s a tough part of the job but it has to be done – fingers crossed he’ll find himself a new club.”

Dorchester will swap tonight’s training session for a friendly match against Bournemouth Poppies at the Avenue Stadium (7.30pm).

Vickers said: “We just want to look at one or two things and give some game time to the likes of Bricey, who has only just joined, and Neil Martin, who’s has not played too much lately.”

* Gorka Etxeberria, who was Vickers’ main rival for the manager’s post, has been appointed sporting director at Segunda Division B side Deportivo Alaves – the Spanish outfit that lost 5-4 to Liverpool in the 2001 UEFA Cup final.
