Senior's focus returns to league

OVERJOYED Trevor Senior celebrated Bridport’s continuing cup success – and then swiftly turned his attentions back to their league campaign.

The Bees confounded the odds on Tuesday night by eliminating Larkhall Athletic and earning a showdown with Bishop Sutton in the last four of the Les Phillips Cup.

Although Senior is intent on lifting the trophy for a third time, he has also stressed the importance of maintaining a rich vein of form in Toolstation Western League Division One.

Bridport have won five of their last seven league outings and Senior has targeted another six to surpass the 50-point mark – starting tonight at lowly Shepton Mallet (7.30pm).

He said: “I’ve made no secret of the fact that the Les Phillips Cup is my priority, and now we are in a position where we have a realistic chance of winning it.

“But we’ve been going really well in the league lately as well and I want us to keep up the momentum so that we are in high spirits when the semi-final comes around on April 17.

“Six more wins will take us to 50 points, which is one more than the club got last season. We have 13 league games left so there is plenty to play for.”

Senior added: “Finishing the season on a positive note will give us a springboard for a decent challenge next season, where we will look to do even better.”

The Bees face a gruelling schedule of five matches in the next nine days and such were their unstinting exertions against Larkhall that fatigue is sure to be a concern.

Matt Condliffe is a doubt for tonight’s contest after aggravating an ankle injury on Tuesday night, while skipper Darren Lock and Chris Clarke are both nursing minor injuries.

Defensive enforcer Ryan Hayter is unavailable, which means Ashley Clarke should slot straight into the back-line as a like-for-like replacement.
