MOONFLEET 75 Dorchester 66

MOONFLEET were made to battle for every shot in a titanic tussle with Dorchester in the Mixed League.

June Barlow, Steve Martin, Sheila Goddard and skip Mike Goddard led the way in the county town by showing tremendous resilience in a 19-16 loss against Dorchester’s T Hubbard, L Myers, E Peavoy and S Hubbard.

The Fleet trailed 13-2 and then 19-12 but hit back both times to prevent too much damage being done to the overall outcome.

The other away rink of Mel Barlow, Jill Bonnett, Jill Poulter and skip Colin Poulter also fought tooth and nail in a single-shot defeat against C Starkey, B Parr, J Myers and D Bonnett.

The Poulter trio went 10-4 up after nine ends but the hosts then hit back to lead 16-13 by the 19th before the Fleet secured an excellent three to take the match into a last-end decider.

Dorchester claimed the all-important shot but the visitors could be happy with their all-round performance.

Back at Moonfleet, the home rink of John Kelly, Sheila Escott, Ray Walbridge and skip Anne White held on for a 19-16 victory following an incredible county town fight-back.

The Fleet looked home and dry at 17-4 up by the 13th end but the quartet of F Langley, J Langley, E Heat and J Dyer had other ideas as they scored an excellent half dozen on the 17th to close the gap to six. They then followed that up by winning three of the last four ends to keep the overall totals extremely close.

However, thankfully for the hosts, Mairie Mathie, Mary Bull, John Warner and skip Pete White were in a ruthless mood against D Caundle, A Key, B Spruly and G Caundle in the most telling game of the clash.

The White quartet went 11-4 up after eight ends and although Dorchester pulled the deficit back to just three the Fleet sprinted away again to record a commanding 24-14 victory, which ultimately proved the major difference between the two sides.

DOLPHIN B 26 MOONFLEET B 38

IN the Purbeck Challenge Trophy, Moonfleet B secured a comfortable success over their counterparts from Dolphin.

Tony Colton, Roy Paull and StJ Corben raced 11-3 in front before L Eady, E Cook and skip C Wake hit back to lead 12-11.

Many teams may have folded at that point but the Fleet soon regained their verve by winning the next three ends on their way to an 18-15 victory.

The other rink was very different with Geoff Whitehead, Harry Nash and Pat Rod sailing to a 23-8 win over M Jones, N Burnley and P Coutts, who had no answer to the visitors’ onslaught.

MOONFLEET C 35 MOONFLEET B 41

CLUB bragging rights were at stake when Moonfleet C and Moonfleet B clashed in a ladies’ league fixture.

The C team rink of Jill Poulter, Ann Sherman, Jean Lamb and Judy Why fought hard in the early exchanges but after being on level terms at 8-8 after seven ends, Sue Paull, Janet Lyones, Sue Trott and Jill Bonnett won the next 12 to move 27-8 in front.

The Why rink were not finished yet though as they picked up six shots on the last two ends to put a bit more respectability on the final scoreline.

The other match ran along similar lines but this time it was the C rink of Glennis Winsper, Mavis Clark, Deo McDine and Liz Williams that raced in front.

They went 20-5 up against June Bolt, Mary Corben, Phyl Barratt and Jennie Brown before the B quartet picked up eight crucial points on a winning run of three ends to cut the deficit to 21-14 and hand their side a six-shot overall victory.

MOONFLEET LADIES B 39 BOURNEMOUTH LADIES C 34

A TWELVE-SHOT margin on the opening rink was enough to see Moonfleet B defeat Bournemouth C in this league fixture.

Amanda Williams, Pam Jeffs, Sue Trott and skip Jenny Brown effectively won the match after they ran out 23-11 winners against M Thompson, B Polack, J Way and skip A Lewn.

That was because Bournemouth’s other rink of J Scarf, N Bland, A Roy and skip T Grey, despite winning, could only beat Fleet’s Mairie Mathie, Janet Lyones, Trixie Dempsey and skip Jill Bonnett 23-16, handing the hosts overall victory by five shots.

MOONFLEET A 28 DORCHESTER A 31

DORCHESTER A narrowly edged out Moonfleet A in a Purbeck Challenge Trophy clash.

Warwick Brown, Mike Durant and skip Ron McCarthy settled first to lead 6-4 against Dorchester’s G Gamlin, J Lawlor and skip A Newton.

The McCarthy rink then upped the tempo, winning six ends in a row, including an excellent five, to take a 16-6 lead at 12 ends before maintaining their form to claim victory by 22-8.

Moonfleet’s other rink of Keith Wyman, Pete Read and skip Mike Goddard found the county town trio of B Paulson, B Tranter and skip E Young in top form with the away side racing into a 14-1 lead after nine ends.

The second half proved no different as the Young rink went on to win 23-6.

BOURNEMOUTH LADIES A 50 MOONFLEET LADIES A 29

BOURNEMOUTH were in commanding form as they crushed their Moonfleet counterparts.

The Weymouth ladies rink of Linda Bryson, Anne White, Thelma Nash and skip Kath Desmond took on J Hudson, C Lemar, L Johnson and skip V Mansell, with the home side racing into a 14-2 lead after 10 ends.

The Mansell four continued to control the game , finally winning 29-11.

Moonfleet’s other rink of Erica Edwards, Shirley Bowley, Margaret Crawford and skip June Searle faced Bournemouth’s J Arnaud, M Rose, J Saunders and skip S Plomer and again the home side settled first taking a 11-6 lead after 11 ends.

The Plomer quartet extended their lead to 14-6 by the 14th end but the Searle four staged a comeback, closing the gap to just two shots by the 18th end. However, a vital three from the home side on the next end proved too much for the Fleet rink who eventually went down 21-16.

DOLPHIN LADIES B 58 MOONFLEET LADIES C 34

DOLPHIN Ladies B were too strong for Moonfleet Ladies C.

The visiting rink of Judy Why, Mary Collins, Sheila Escott and skip Liz Williams took on Janet Harford, Chris Sexton, Joan Eady and skip Vicki Miller with the Williams’ quartet quickly into their stride to take a 13-7 lead at nine ends.

The home side responded and closed the gap to two shots after 12 ends but the Williams rink then won the next three ends, including an excellent five, to lead 21-12 by the 15th end.

The Miller four then upped their game, closing the gap to just four shots with one end to play and came close to snatching something from the game with a three on the last end to eventually lose 22-21.

Moonfleet’s other away rink of Sue Boan, Mavis Clark, Deo McDine and skip Heather Gillingham faced Dolphin’s Jill Hoburt, Maggie Wilkins, Mo Molan and skip Barbara Brown and the home side had the edge in the early stages holding a 12-7 lead at nine ends.

They extended this to 17-11 by the 14th end before putting in a very powerful finish to run up a commanding victory of 37-12.

DORCHESTER B 36 MOONFLEET B 30

THE county town B side triumphed over Moonfleet B in this Purbeck Challenge Trophy clash.

The visiting three of Tony Colton, Pat Rod and skip StJ Corben faced T Webb, G Mumford and skip R Nicholas with the Fleet trio opening up a 14-4 lead after 10 ends which they extended to 18-10 at 15.

However, the Nicholas rink put in a fighting finish, winning the last three ends, including a valuable four to eventually go down by 18-16.

Moonfleet’s other away rink of Colin Poulter, Roy Paull and skip Harry Nash faced C Ackerman, D Glanville and skip D Clark with the home side taking control from the start, leading by 15-4 after 11 ends.

The Nash rink then closed the gap to 16-11 after 15 but a three on the next end proved too much a difference and the home side claimed the win, 20-12.
