COUNTY town youngsters will be thrown in at the deep end tonight as Dorchester Town Reserves visit high-flying Gosport Borough (7.45pm).
However, manager Robbie Taylor is backing his inexperienced charges to stay afloat at Privett Park.
He said: “There was a decision to make about whether we would use it as a first-team game, given that they haven’t played for a while, but having spoken to Phil Simkin there won’t be any first-team players playing tonight.
“They’ll be having a good training session instead so tonight is a chance for the youngsters to prove themselves and put on a good show.
“Gosport are a good side, probably one of the better teams in the league, so it’ll be a good test for the younger players.
“It is always nice to have some older heads around the team but throughout the club we have a relatively young squad and sometimes you have to be thrown in at the deep end.
“You tend to learn a lot quicker and although you sometimes have to learn the hard way, it’s not always a bad thing as it’s a good test of character.
“The young players we have though are more than capable.”
Like the first team, the reserves saw their last fixture fall victim to the cold snap. And Taylor is keeping his fingers crossed that tonight’s Wyvern Premier League clash receives the green light.
He added: “Whether the weather is on our side remains to be seen. It’s a bit milder than it has been but the temperatures are still low.”
Should the game go ahead, Dorch-ester will be without Josh Tennant and Matt Goodland as both players remain sidelined by foot injuries.
