ABINGDON UNITED 0 DORCHESTER TOWN 2

A SAM Lanahan strike followed up by Dan Smith’s spot-kick proved enough for Dorchester Town to progress past Abingdon United in the FA Cup.

The win, manager Graham Kemp’s third on the spin since taking over at the Avenue, scooped the club £4,500 and put them in today’s draw for the third qualifying round.

The visitors wasted a few chances in the first period, but went close with Chris Dillon in the early minutes hitting his shot on the turn, forcing Jamie Zoldan in the home goal to turn the effort over the bar.

Hosts Abindgon had a couple of efforts that didn’t threaten, before Ben Joyce hammered a chance on the run into the side netting for the Magpies.

Joyce then had a go from range once more and the sprawling Zoldan was relieved to see it fizz a yard wide.

Dillon then rose highest from a corner but headed over as Dor-chester threatened but continued to waste their opportunities, with Smith hitting the ball over the top from range.

The visitors were then nearly made to pay for not taking their chances as, just before the break, United’s Kieran Davis was set up 10 yards out with the best opening of the half, but he hurried his effort and smashed the ball over the bar.

After the break, Dorchester took control and the game’s first goal arrived after 55 minutes.

Midfielder Lanahan found some space to run at the home defence and gave Zoldan no chance with a crisp shot that curled into the far corner.

Abingdon came back imm-ediately as Andrew Younie forced a smart save out of Alan Walker-Harris after the keeper punched the ball out from a corner.

But on the whole, Kemp’s men were dominant and were camped in the Abingdon half for the majority of the second period, and a second goal seemed likely to kill off the game with the home side resorting to rare counter- attacks.

With 20 minutes left, the Magpies’ pressure told once more with the home goalkeeper giving away a soft penalty, and Smith sent him the wrong way from the spot to put the game to bed.

Five minutes later, Smith was causing all sorts of problems once again as he drove a low shot, which hit a post and ran along the line hitting the other post in the Abingdon goal.

The only real scare for the Magpies in the second half came in the dying minutes when substitute Anaclet Odhiambo broke clear, but a good challenge by skipper Nathan Walker denied him.
