DORCHESTER 1 WIMBORNE 3

DORCHESTER Town were dumped out of the FA Trophy today after a toothless performance at the Avenue against Wimborne.

Mark Gamble struck twice for the visitors as the Evo-Stik Division One South & West outfit secured a place in the second qualifying round later this month.

County town boss Graham Kemp made four changes to the Dorchester side that started Tuesday's win against Parley with Tony Rolls, Chris Dillon, Kieran Parrett and Andy Robinson coming in.

Sam Lanahan, Ryan Murray, Alex Godfrey and Oakley Hanger all dropped to the bench.

Jake Smeeton, Nick Crittenden, Josh Kaye missed out through injury, though Ben Joyce returned from his hamstring problem and was among the substitutes.

Keen to make an impression, Rolls got involved in the action early on, but he only succeeded in clattering into Matt Kemble and was lucky not to be booked.

Kemble had Wimborne’s first shot on goal, albeit one which cleared the Dorchester’s crossbar, before Dan Smith fired wide at the other end following positive approach play from Jack Odam.

A slip by centre-half Dillon nearly proved fatal for the hosts but Jamie Davidson couldn’t get his shot away – he did go down under a challenge in the box but referee Martin Bloor waved play on.

However, the visitors took confidence in their opponents’ shakiness at the back, and they went in front on 20 minutes.

Gamble left Jamie Gleeson for dust on the left flank and delivered a ball into the area that was just asking to be put away.

And Kemble was there to convert from close range and put his side in the driving seat.

Dorchester’s afternoon took another turn for the worse five minutes before the break when left-back Matt Oldring was forced off with an injury. He was replaced by Murray.

Robinson was the first name in the referee’s notebook a few minutes later, the midfielder guilty of a shirt pull on James Stokoe that he did little to disguise.

The last chance of the half fell to the hosts. Smith set Odam free down the right and he found Parrett just inside the Wimborne area, but the ball wouldn’t sit down for the Dorchester man and the visitors got back to clear the danger.

All in all, it was a desperately poor first half which lacked any real quality, especially from the county town team.

Jason Harvell in the Wimborne goal wouldn’t have had an easier 45 minutes this season as Dorchester hardly tested him at all before the break.

The story was much the same immediately after half-time, with Wimborne the side looking more likely to find the back of the net.

Kemble went close to getting his second of the tie on 58 minutes, only for Alan Walker-Harris to tip the striker’s curling attempt over for a corner.

Dorchester manager Kemp then threw caution to the wind with a double substitution on the hour mark. Joyce and Lanahan replaced Parrett and first-half substitute Murray.

The two substitutes had hardly been given time to settle when Wimborne doubled their advantage.

And this time it was Kemble who returned the favour to his strike partner Gamble with a knock down which fell perfectly for the latter to side-foot home from six yards.

Four minutes later and the hosts halved the deficit.

A free-kick from Robinson found its way to skipper Walker and the centre-half notched his third goal in the last three matches.

It could well have been 2-2 soon after but Joyce dragged his shot just wide of the far post.

That miss proved pivotal as, with six minute to go, Wimborne made it 3-1 through that man Gamble.

Davidson won the ball 25 yards out from the Dorchester goal and when the referee waved play on after the midfielder had gone down in the box, replacement George Webb calmly played in Gamble who had the easy task of beating Walker-Harris.
