CAMBRIDGE CITY 0 DORCHESTER TOWN 3

THE Magpies made it back-to-back wins in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division with a priceless away win against Cambridge City.

Strikes from Charlie Davis, Chris Dillon and Bradley Tarbuck ensured Mark Jermyn’s troops made it 14 points from their first eight league fixtures.

The contest at Westwood Road was delayed in kicking off due to the Magpies’ bus breaking down en route to the ground.

Following their derby day triumph over Weymouth in their last league fixture, the big team news was that player-manager Jermyn dropped himself to the bench.

Cambridge were without influential striker Michael Malcolm.

But midfielder Davis, who has been nursing a hamstring problem, was deemed fit to start for the visitors and soon put the wheels in motion on nine minutes.

He showed good technique to fire a free-kick into the net at the near post to put Jermyn’s troops a goal to the good.

Alex Serrano hit a shot just over the bar from 10 yards out in search of a leveller for City, but the Magpies ended the opening period in control.

Opportunities also fell to Ben Watson and Jonah Ayunga, who could not quite double the away side’s advantage.

But just a minute after half-time, the county town club did manage to get their second through central- defender Chris Dillon. He put home Ayunga’s low centre.

And the icing on the cake then came when Tarbuck, who agreed a contract deal at the Avenue in the build-up to the game, nipped in and pounced on a slip up in the City backline on 57 minutes to secure the points.

Frontman Watson also missed a penalty for the visitors with 10 minutes remaining but it did not take the shine off what was a great away win for the Magpies, who were also boosted as Tony Lee and Neil Martin made their returns from injury in the second half.

Reflecting on the performance boss Jermyn told Echosport: “I think our defensive displays in the last two games have really stood up and given us a good base to work from.

“That’s credit to the goalkeeper and all the defenders really.”

Jermyn also commented on the shrewd move to leave himself out and re-introduce Davis from the start.

“I am just trying to manage myself the best I can really,” he said.

“I always try to be as fair as I can to the players and when we make selections there is a lot of thought behind it.

“Charlie has great energy and I am looking at him to get a good few goals for us this season.

“He gives us a bit of extra legs in midfield and with Lewis (Morgan) they work well as a partnership.

“Charlie is through his injury now and he is one of the players I am really backing to be one of our strong contenders to play a lot of games.

“We have got about five or six young lads that we have high hopes for and, hopefully, from their point of view they will have a good time at Dorchester and their careers will take off.”
