KINGSTONIAN 2

Bennett 14, 30

DORCHESTER TOWN 1

Martin 13

DORCHESTER Town’s hopes of a trip to Wembley are over for another season after Dan Bennett scored twice to send Kingstonian into the third qualifying round of the FA Trophy.

Bennett’s brace in Monday night’s replay at Kingsmeadow cancelled out Neil Martin’s opener for the Magpies.

The Ks will now host Truro City in the next phase of the competition a week on Saturday.

While injury again kept striker Jonah Ayunga out of the county town squad for the trip to London, Charlie Davis did return from suspension.

Lewis Morgan dropped to the bench in the only change to the side that began Saturday’s 2-2 draw between the teams at the Avenue.

Dorchester had made all the early running in the first game 48 hours earlier and they opened the scoring again on Monday.

This time the Magpies broke the deadlock in the 13th minute courtesy of Martin’s first goal of the season.

However, the visiting supporters had barely finished celebrating when the Ks got back on level terms.

Bennett’s late own goal prevented the Ks from progressing on Saturday but he put that behind him to make it 1-1.

And things got even better for Bennett and Kingstonian on the half hour when the midfielder notched his second.

The Magpies made a change at half-time with Morgan coming on for Martin, but the Ks made the stronger start to the second period and went close to going 3-1 up on a couple of occasions.

First, visiting keeper Alan Walker-Harris made a superb save and then minutes later a Kingstonian attempt on goal hit the crossbar.

And the pressure on the Dorchester defence didn’t let up.

It could well have been game over for the visitors when the Ks hit the woodwork again and Walker-Harris made two smart saves.

Needing a goal to take the encounter to extra-time, Dorchester swapped Nick Crittenden for Oakley Hanger and then Sol Ayunga for player-manager Mark Jermyn.

But try as they might, the Magpies couldn’t find that elusive second and Kingstonian held on.
