WIMBORNE TOWN 2

DORCHESTER TOWN 0

TWO goals from ex-Magpie Toby Holmes knocked Dorchester Town out of the Dorset Senior Cup at the quarter-final stage with a 2-0 loss at Cuthbury.

The result means Dorchester are now going to end the season trophy-less.

The visitors made two changes to the starting XI that kicked off against Merthyr Town on Saturday, with Chris Clarke and Aaron Rodriguez coming in for Neil Martin and David Jerrard.

Before kick-off, both Callum Rose and Mo Baghdadi extended their loan deals with the Magpies _ Rose by two months, Baghdadi by one.

Wimborne began brightly with ex-Terra Luke Burbidge causing Clarke a number of problems on the left, and it was from a Burbidge cross that Dorchester were forced into a goal-line clearance after a deflection.

Burbidge again beat Clarke moments later but his cross to Toby Holmes was behind the striker and his acrobatic volley was cleared by Clarke.

Dorchester took their time to get into the match but Rodriguez had their best chance of the half when he collected Billy Lowes’ clipped pass, only to see former Magpie Matt Oldring produce a timely block.

Rodriguez then dribbled across the Wimborne area to find Clarke, who registered Dorchester’s first shot on target, with goalkeeper Gerard Benfield easily gathering his tame shot.

Dorchester were beginning to dominate the play and after a neat flick from Kyle Egan, Baghdadi fired a shot wide of the near post from 20 yards.

Tempers flared just before half-time when Baghdadi was upended by a brisk tackle, before Carmichael hacked down Sam Bayston.

After the break, Wimborne took the lead after an excellent move involving both Luke and Toby Holmes. The former slid the tall striker in and the Wimborne number nine showed good composure to place his effort past the advancing Chris Weale.

Sam Davidson headed wide at the far post for the hosts before Holmes grabbed his second, latching on to a Burbidge chipped pass and delicately lobbing Weale.

Substitute Ed Bastick did hit the bar as Dorchester pressed for a goal late on, but Wimborne were good value for their win as they held on.
