DORCHESTER TOWN 4

Bastick 53, 59, Lanahan 84, Baghdadi 89

FARNBOROUGH 0

DORCHESTER Town earned a second resounding win at the Avenue Stadium in three days, beating Farnborough 4-0 in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division.

After a goalless first-half Ed Bastick scored twice in six minutes before substitute Sam Lanahan and Mo Baghdadi added two late strikes.

Dorchester named an unchanged starting XI from the side that began Saturday’s 6-0 drubbing of St Ives.

New loan signing Archie Collins made the bench, and there was a return to the matchday squad for Dom Panesar-Dower after illness.

Jason Brookes was the only absentee from Saturday’s squad as Dorchester opted for continuity over making changes during the busy festive period.

Neither side made a fast start to the game but Dorchester did register the first shot on target through a weak Phil Ormrod header before Antonio Diaz caused a scramble in the box with a shot blocked by two Farnborough defenders before the Yellows cleared.

Diaz then turned provider when he released Ormrod into the area with a nicely-weighted pass, but the striker’s square ball to Baghdadi missed its target.

Bastick, who had the pace to outstrip Boro right-back Bobby Dormer for the duration of the half, won a corner from which Diaz’s delivery was nodded straight to Luke Winsper, only for the combative midfielder to drive well over from 25 yards.

Farnborough had rarely threatened but after Dan Walker was beaten to an attempted header, Luke Evans curled a 20-yarder just over the bar with Chris Weale scrambling to his right.

Bastick was having an excellent game on the left and he drove into space beyond the Boro defence but once more Baghdadi was beaten to his pull-back.

Dorchester then created their clearest chance of the half from a Martin free-kick but Callum Rose could only head over after jumping highest.

Despite containing Boro well up to that point, the Magpies nearly undid themselves when a Winsper volley cannoned off Ross Carmichael and set Jamie Cureton free.

The veteran forward scampered clear but just dragged his shot wide from the left-hand side of the area as the sides went in level at half-time.

Just as they did against St Ives, Dorchester upped their game in the second half and it took just eight minutes for them to find the breakthrough.

Diaz and Baghdadi combined intricately with the German winger’s cute dink inside setting Diaz through into space to pick out Bastick, who swept home firmly when unmarked 12 yards out.

Boro nearly responded with a goal of their own but Weale was out quickly to smartly block Adam Everitt’s shot after a flick-on from a corner.

Bastick’s goal was richly deserved in what had arguably been his best display in a Dorchester shirt, and he doubled his tally six minutes later.

Diaz drove forward and despite losing control of the ball on a bobbly patch of turf, seeing the ball roll through his legs, Billy Lowes was on hand to flick the ball out wide to Bastick who, again unmarked, controlled and drilled a shot across the uneven goalmouth into the far corner past Upward.

Undeterred by Dorchester’s second goal, Farnborough pressed on and again might have scored immediately after conceding, although Everitt again wasted a header at the back post.

Boss Steve Thompson deprived Bastick of a chance to claim a hat-trick by subbing him and Ormrod off for Lanahan and Collins, who then got his feet in a muddle in spurning a fabulous opportunity to score after Kyle Egan and Baghdadi combined neatly on the right to tee him up 12 yards out.

Dorchester had a tight grasp of the match at this stage and a free-kick routine saw Martin strike the base of Upward’s left-hand post with a crisp 25-yard drive.

With six minutes remaining Rose’s darting run down the right of the area yielded the Magpies’ third goal, with the centre-back finding Lanahan to tap home into an empty net.

Farnborough’s defensive standards plummeted late-on and after conceding the third, having left Lanahan unmarked, Martin nearly caught Upward off his line with a 55-yard shot that he was unlucky to see drift wide.

But Dorchester scored their tenth goal in two games when Lanahan’s through ball set Baghdadi free to poke home his fifth goal in two games and complete an excellent win for the Magpies.
