DORCHESTER continue to hover uncomfortably close to the Blue Square South relegation zone.
But former Woking favourite Ian Selley, now a pivotal force in the Magpies’ midfield, is confident they can turn the tide.
It was only in the last 20 minutes that the full-time Surrey side finally claimed control over a gutsy Dorchester outfit.
And Selley had words of encouragement for new player/caretaker manager Ashley Vickers, who watched his re-shaped charges from the substitutes’ bench.
“We tried a new formation and there were several signs of promise for the future,” said the experienced former Arsenal and Fulham star.
“We got at them really well in the first half,” he added. “They had just come off the back of a six-goal FA Trophy win but we looked sharper and hungrier than them for a good spell.
“I think their full-time training helped them in the end on a very heavy pitch and it shows the strength of their squad that they could afford to bring on two really exciting on-loan teenagers from Crystal Palace, just as we were starting to tire a bit.”
Woking had an early chance when Giuseppe Sole fired just over, but Dorchester hit back strongly with the dangerous Steve Devlin breaking clear on the left to hit a teasing low cross that home keeper Ros Worner just snatched away from Ryan Moss at the near post.
It was no surprise when the Dorset men took the lead after 24 minutes.
Jamie Gleeson’s header from a corner caused confusion in the home goalmouth and skipper Mark Jermyn managed to stab the ball home at the second attempt.
Woking levelled just a minute before the interval when exciting midfielder Harry Arter, who is attracting a lot of interest from Football League clubs, drove at the defence before playing a perfect pass into the path of Moses Ademola, who ran in to beat Regan Coward with an angled drive.
Although Devlin and Moss continued to cause problems for the home defence, it was Woking who asked most of the questions in the second half, with Arter and Tom Hutchinson both going close.
Dorchester brought on Matt Groves for Hary Nodwell and Olly Barnes for Neil Martin, but they were now coming out second best in most of the crucial challenges.
Only a superb save by Coward denied a fierce low drive from lively substitute Matthew Wright, but he could do absolutely nothing about Woking’s second goal in the 76th minute – a venomous 15-yard blockbuster from Arter.
Woking were in full flow now, with their second young Eagle substitute, Nathaniel Pinney, sealing victory four minutes from time as he collected a clever pass from Wright to fire gleefully home on the run.
