DORCHESTER Town were sent crashing out of the Dorset Senior Cup tonight at the hands of former skipper Alex Browne and his Wimborne Town side.

The quarter-final tie at the Jewson Stadium remained goalless for almost an hour but three goals in 17 minutes, courtesy of Scott Joyce and a James Stokoe brace, set the Wessex Premier League outfit on their way.

Ryan Moss grabbed a consolation for the Blue Square South hosts but Joyce struck once more to ensure the visitors’ passage into the last four.

Caretaker-boss Ashley Vickers read the riot act to his players after a lacklustre performance, but is confident they can bounce back.

He said: “We wanted to get a win under our belts and gain some confidence but that wasn’t to be and full credit to Wimborne. They had the bit between their teeth and we didn’t match them in that facet.

“I spoke harshly with the players regarding that. The qualities I bang on about such as desire and passion were certainly missing and Wimborne were deserved winners.

“That was pretty much our first-choice side out there and you can’t hide from that fact. I’ve asked myself this question a lot, and it is can I trust these players to produce absolute endeavour and passion for 90 minutes week in, week out?

“The honest answer is that there a few lads I can’t trust right now. The boys have let themselves down but the responsibility lies with me and if I’m not happy with the personnel then that will have to be addressed.

“I’ll be working my fingers to the bone to put things right on Saturday, and I’m sure the lads who play will give their all.”

One man who did impress Vickers was Wimborne defender Nathan Walker, who could be set to join the county town side after a seven-day approach was made at the weekend.

Vickers added: “He played very well and had a point to prove. He’s a winner and teams need to be built upon winners. I’ll be talking with him and we’ll see what develops.”

Vickers opted for a full-strength line-up while his opposite number Browne named six men with county town connections in his starting XI.

Those returning to the Jewson Stadium were keeper Nick Hutchings, James Wilson, Nathan and Michael Walker, Liam Green and Tom Clarke.

The first half hardly set pulses racing on a rather chilly night with the best chance falling to the visitors three minutes from the interval.

However, after Clarke had jinked his way into the penalty area and pulled the ball back for striker partner Joyce, Harry Montacute produced a crucial block from four yards.

Earlier in the half, Hutchings’ blushes were spared when his miss-kick from a John Wyatt back pass bobbled wide while Gary Bowles twice went close with headed efforts.

The second period started in complete contrast to the first with Phil Walsh forcing Hutchings to tip over inside 60 seconds of the restart.

Dorchester went even closer on 55 minutes as Montacute’s long-range shot was steered onto the crossbar by Mark Jermyn, who then sliced the rebound.

However, the hosts were left stunned just four minutes later as Joyce opened the scoring with a terrific 25-yard effort that flew into the bottom-left corner.

And it was 2-0 in the 64th minute as Stokoe fired home from close range after the county town defence failed to clear.

Regan Coward repeated Hutchings’ first-half trick of kicking thin air 18 minutes from time. But he too was fortunate to see the ball roll wide of goal.

Moss was denied by Hutchings four minutes later and the away side added insult to injury by going straight up the other end and bagging a third – Stokoe netting his second of the night with a cool finish.

Dorchester appeared destined not to score, striking the woodwork for the second time with Moss the man being denied on this occasion.

But with just seconds left on the clock, a cross from Jermyn was spilt by the keeper and smashed home by Moss.

Wimborne weren’t finished though, and added a fourth in injury-time via leading scorer Joyce.
