Dorchester warmed up for Saturday’s trip to Chelmsford with victory over Bridport in a friendly at the Jewson Stadium last night.
The Magpies ran out fairly comfortable victors, courtesy of goals from Mark Jermyn and Ryan Moss, but they did not have everything their own way and were made to work hard for their win by a dogged Bees outfit.
Caretaker-boss Ashley Vickers gave a start to new signing Nathan Walker but another of his recent acquisitions – striker Jules Emati-Emati – had to settle for a spot on the bench.
Dorchester enjoyed the better of the early exchanges and saw Moss fire wide from close range before Neil Martin forced former county town keeper Simon Evans into action with a fierce drive from distance.
Evans made an even better stop from Phil Walsh on the 20-minute mark, immediately followed by a decent stop at the feet of Moss.
Bridport more than held their own however, and Walsh had to be alert to deny Dan Jones just past the half hour.
Ashley Clarke then blazed over when well placed before the Magpies forged ahead two minutes ahead of the interval through Jermyn. The midfielder met a cross from Moss at the near post and steered the ball past Evans albeit via a deflection from Alan Hill.
There was still time for the Bees to find a leveller but Regan Coward made a superb one-handed save low to his right to deny Clarke.
Moss fired over two minutes into the second half before Emati-Emati, rep-lacing Matt Groves, also cleared the crossbar with a header from Ryan Hill’s centre.
At the other end, Coward saved well from Matt Condliffe’s drive and Steve Devlin was on hand to clear the danger with two Bridport players lurking.
Nick Crittenden came on for his first action in more than six weeks and he made an instant impact, picking out Moss who carried the ball well before drilling low into the bottom-left corner.
Emati-Emati presented Moss with an opportunity to double his tally but the Magpies’ striker was unable to find the target 14 yards out.
Harry Nodwell went close with a 20-yard effort while Bridport substitute Shane Evans clipped wide seven minutes from the end when one-on-one with Dorchester’s replacement keeper Sam Filkins.
The final action saw Dorchester denied a third goal as Walker headed against the bar from Crittenden’s corner.
Caretaker-boss Ashley Vickers said: “It was a good night for both teams as it’s great to play rather than train. Bridport were a credit to Trevor Senior and thanks to him for bringing his side over.
“They gave us a good game and it was appreciated. These games are never easy but we stuck to our task.”
