WELLING UTD 3
Day 11, Pugh 44, Pires 65
Dorchester TOWN 2
Flood 30 pen, Dovell 82 pen
DORCHESTER failed to maintain their recent fine record over Welling after going down at Park View Road on Saturday.
In truth, the scoreline slightly flattered the Magpies who for large parts were outplayed by the Wings in this Blue Square Bet South clash.
The hosts started the game brightly, enjoying plenty of possession, without creating too many chances.
Jack Obersteller linked up well with Joe Healy down the left, playing a delicate ball for Healy to run on to but he flashed his effort wide of a post.
Welling took the lead in the 11th minute when Loui Fazakerley was fouled on the edge of the area by Kyle Critchell.
Wings’ player-manager Jamie Day stepped up and curled his effort over the wall and, despite the despairing outstretched arm of visiting keeper Alan Walker-Harris, the effort reboun-ded off the inside of a post and into the net.
Ashley Vickers’ men responded well to going behind and came close to an equaliser when Adam Meeki flicked a deep free-kick on from Steve Devlin only for his effort to skim off the top of the crossbar, much to relief of ex- Dorchester loanee Dan Thomas in the Wings’ goal.
Day nearly doubled the lead again from a free-kick but Walker-Harris was alert and managed to produce a smart save at his near post for a corner.
Dorchester were struggling to contain the Wings’ strike force and nearly went further behind when Andy Pugh just failed to keep his lobbed effort down when through on goal.
Despite the home side’s dominance Dorchester drew level on the half hour mark. Mekki went on a mazy run before Fazakerley appeared to win the ball with a well-timed tackle. However referee Mr Jerden disagreed and pointed to the spot.
Chris Flood stepped up and confidently smashed his penalty straight down the middle.
Welling responded and good work from Pugh set up the busy Fazakerley but he blazed over when well placed.
Fazakerley then whipped in a precision cross but Loick Pires’ outstretched leg could not connect.
On the stroke of half-time, Welling regained the lead.
Thomas’ long kick was flicked on by Pires, which caught the Dorchester defence offguard, and Pugh rushed on to the ball, drew out Walker-Harris before rounding him and coolly stroking home.
The visitors started the second half with more purpose without having too many clear-cut chances in the early exchanges.
Nathan Walker should have done better when he put his free header from a Mekki corner wide.
At the other end Pires’ cross-cum-shot nearly caught Walker-Harris out but the ball dropped on to the roof of the net.
Welling scored their third and, what turned out to be the crucial goal, in the 65th minute. Fazakerley picked up a loose ball in the middle of the park and played an inch-perfect ball to Pires, the forward took one touch before unleashing a wonderful left- footed effort that rifled into the top corner of the net to give Walker-Harris no chance.
The home side, now fully in control, went close with Pires blazing over with a similar effort to his goal wide before substitute Ben Davisson twisted and turned in the area before drawing a brilliant one-handed save from Walker-Harris.
At the other end, Welling skipper Jack Parkinson had to be alert to head substitute Rico Wilson’s cross over the bar as Dorchester battled to get back into the game.
The visitors did indeed close the deficit with seven minutes remaining. Parkinson was adjudged to have pulled down Wilson in the area and the referee had no hesitation in giving his second penalty. Ryan Dovell duly tucked the ball into the corner.
Dorchester now sensing an unlikely equaliser, launched long balls into the Welling defence but the home side held firm and played out the four minutes of injury time to the relief of the home fans.
