THE great escape is well and truly on, according to Phil Simkin, as long as his Magpies can maintain the standards they have set themselves in their last two games.

The Dorchester Town boss made the admission following Saturday’s 2-1 win at Tonbridge Angels where his side snatched victory in the dying seconds for the second match in succession.

This time it was Mark Jermyn that was the hero, steered home the winner deep into added-time, after Nick Crittenden had cancelled out Michael Bakare’s opener in an even first half.

The result has taken the Magpies to within two points of safety in Skrill South but having played more games than most of the teams around them, their good form needs to continue.

Simkin told Echosport: “Three minutes of added-time had already elapsed before Jem got the winner.

“It was end-to-end throughout and for the neutral it must have been unbelievable stuff.

“With 10 minutes to go, we replaced Warren Byerley with Clive Makoni, and just went for it, and to claim the points with the last kick of the game again was just incredible.

“Alan Walker-Harris made some unbelievable saves and we really have now given ourselves a chance.

“We need to keep doing it, which is not going to be easy, but we are getting that rub of the green now that we weren’t getting earlier in the season, and you can see the belief is there too.

“The players are going out there, believing they can win games now, and their confidence is growing every week.

“Over the last month, we have brought in the likes of Nathan Walker, Warren Byerley, Nathan Craig and Ashley Yeoman, who are all quality players at this level, and they have given us a real boost.

“Tonbridge are a decent side, make no mistake about that, but the lads ran themselves to a standstill and there is no doubt we deserved the win come the final whistle.”

Simkin was delighted with the efforts of every single player on Saturday but he did pick out a few individuals for special praise.

He added: “Nathan Craig was unbelievable and I thought Nathan Walker and Warren Byerley were both outstanding.

“Warren got battered again all afternoon but he held the ball up superbly for us.

“Alan Walker-Harris was also fantastic and made a great save in the second half when they looked certain to score, and Nick Crittenden, at 35-years-old, was just incredible.

“We cannot do much more than what we are doing but we need to keep it going.”

Next up for the Magpies is a home clash against Staines Town on Saturday (3pm).
