DORCHESTER Town boss Phil Simkin has signed former Horsham skipper Ryan Woodford on a 12-month deal after his side secured a morale-boosting pre-season win at St Mary’s Field.

Woodford, who can play in defence or midfield, came on at half-time during the 5-1 victory over Bridport to play at centre-back.

Trialist Will Agbo strengthened his claims for a contract at the Avenue with a brace, while Ben Joyce, Jake Smeeton and Dan Smith also found the net.

And the win was just what the doctor ordered for the Magpies after their heavy defeat to AFC Bournemouth at the weekend.

The first clear-cut chance of the game fell to Sam Lanahan but the Dorchester midfielder’s shot was blocked by Shane Evans.

At the other end, Dan Wise nearly embarrassed Alan Walker-Harris after a poor clearance by the visiting keeper.

The visitors made the breakthrough in the 28th minute when Smith fed Agbo and he slid the ball past Filkins.

Matt Morley nearly levelled for the home side, only for his excellent shot to rattle the bar.

Just before the hour mark Joyce made it 2-0 with a low drive but Ryan Dovell took advantage of some slack defending to halve the deficit.

Bridport were made to pay for a few missed chances as Dorchester doubled their tally in the space of two minutes.

Agbo netted his second and Smeeton curled in a superb free-kick from 25 yards, then Smith added a fifth late on.
