MAGPIES’ boss Mark Jermyn has not ruled out bringing more fresh faces to the club this season.

However, the Dorchester chief insists any new signing must be someone who he feels he can develop into a better player.

Jermyn is looking forward to seeing what Mark Irvine and Lewis Horsburgh will add to his squad following their arrivals late last week.

And although finances dictate the county town player-manager’s options in the transfer market to a large extent, he is constantly keeping an eye out for potential acquisitions.

“We’re always on the lookout because you never know if the next big thing is around the corner,” he told Echosport.

“If we come across someone we would like to work with and who is willing to work with us then we’ll look at them.

“But we’re not just going to bring someone in because they’ve been at a pro club, it’s more about their character.

“If we can work with them and feel we can get more out of them then that’s the type of player we want.

“With the resources we have to work with it’s about taking a player who might be rough around the edges and moulding them to what we want.”

Jermyn revealed that a hitch in the paperwork prevented Horsburgh being involved in the 0-0 draw at Hitchin on Saturday.

But he was pleased with how Irvine’s debut went after his introduction as a second-half substitute.

He added: “We were going to have Lewis with us but unfortunately there were some difficulties with the paperwork.

“Everything was signed but Dave Martin did a check with the FA and it showed he was still linked to Portsmouth.

“We thought about involving him but we didn’t want to risk it.

“It probably would have been alright but in our position you don’t want to get points taken off you.”

And on Irvine, he said: “We know we’ve got a few games left but we’re really concentrating on how high we can finish while looking ahead to next season as well.

“The best way of looking at players is dropping them in and seeing how they do.

“That’s what we did with Mark and he could have covered himself in glory with the chance he had.

“He got into a great position and pulled off his marker. His first touch was great but he shot wide from the edge of the box.

“Maybe with a bit more composure he could have scored but I was pleased with how we did.

“He looked sharp but needs to adjust to this level of football.

“We’ve got high hopes for him and he could be a bit similar as a player to Bradley Tarbuck.”
