BOSS Mark Jermyn is excited by the prospect of working with Mark Irvine, who he feels has “got a lot of potential”.

Former Southampton striker Irvine signed a 12-month contract at the Avenue after Dorchester’s friendly defeat to Salisbury on Wednesday.

His move to the Magpies comes following a loan spell with the county town outfit towards the back end of last season.

Irvine’s arrival on a permanent basis gives Jermyn a welcome boost to his attacking options.

“Mark has got a lot of potential,” said the Dorchester player-manager. “And I had a chat with him and his dad about fulfilling that.

“We can only coach Mark to how we want him to play, ultimately he is going to define his own future.

“There are lots of players you have high hopes for who don’t turn out as you wanted, but I’m hoping Mark is one of those that does progress.”

Highlighting what he feels are Irvine’s strengths, Jermyn added: “One of the things that stands out straight away is his pace.

“He is sharp with the ball at his feet, not bad technically, and quite a good finisher.

“We had shooting practice at the back end of last season and you could see he knows where the net is.

“I think he can do well at the level we’re playing and I’m looking forward to working with him.”
