DORCHESTER Town’s stunning 3-2 victory at Hungerford demonstrated the character of the county town side’s players and was a reward for “sticking to our guns”, according to boss Mark Jermyn.

Things did not look good for the Magpies when they trailed the Crusaders 2-0 at half-time on Saturday, but three quick goals after the restart turned the game on its head.

Chris Dillon, Oakley Hanger and Lewis Morgan all opened their accounts for the season as Jermyn’s men stormed back to register another three points in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division.

Reflecting on his side’s comeback, Jermyn said: “One of the things I spoke about during pre-season was the character of the lads in the squad and how it’s what I look for when bringing in new players.

“Everyone showed that character in abundance on Saturday, coming from two goals down to win the match 3-2.

“The players we have want to achieve things and they really do work hard for each other.

“There was only one voice in the changing room at half-time and the tone and direction of the conversation was one way.

“The players picked up on it and they did what they were asked to do in the second half.

“It was just a case of sticking to our guns and to keep playing the way we play.

“We just had to keep believing in each other and the group, and in the end it got us through.”

However, there are still some areas of Dorchester’s game that need improving.

“There were mixed feelings about the first half,” added Jermyn. “For some reason, in the last two games we haven’t been at it at set-pieces.

“Their first goal came from a cross that was headed in and the second was down to some poor play from us.

“We played to our strengths in the second half and got a goal back very quickly, which is something we spoke about doing at half-time.

“Everyone is buoyant and looking forward to the next game on Tuesday, but we’ve got to identify the reason for us getting beaten at set-pieces.”

For that match tomorrow, at home against Frome Town (7.45pm), Jermyn is hoping to have Charlie Davis available after he went off in the first half on Saturday.

“It was a big blow to see Charlie going off in the first half but we brought on Bradley Tarbuck and he did well, as we know he can,” he continued.

“Charlie felt a bit of a twinge in his hamstring so we erred on the side of caution and replaced him with Bradley, who was exceptional in the second half.

“Chris Dillon (who made his first start of the season) started off a bit rusty but he did miss pretty much the whole of pre-season.

“He’s a good lad with a lot of character and it makes a massive difference when he is in the side.”
