DORCHESTER Town boss Mark Jermyn has admitted that his side’s tally of nine goals in their first three games of the season was something not even he could have foreseen.

The Magpies’ free-scoring start to the new campaign gives them six points out of a possible nine going into tonight’s clash with Frome Town at the Avenue (7.45pm).

And while Jermyn is thrilled with the number of times his side has found the back of the net, he is also pleased to see the goals being shared around the team.

Seven players – Jonah Ayunga, Tony Lee, Charlie Davis, Matt Oldring, Chris Dillon, Oakley Hanger and Lewis Morgan – have all been on target in the matches against Histon, Cirencester and Hungerford.

“I must admit, I wouldn’t have predicted us scoring nine goals in our first three games,” said player-manager Jermyn.

“However, one of the reasons we went for the players we signed in pre-season, like Mark (Irvine), Jonah, Bradley (Tarbuck) and Charlie, was that they are all attack-minded people.

“Over the last couple of seasons we haven’t had many quick players at the club with out and out pace.

“We haven’t got the biggest budget so we’ve just tried to mix a bit pace, skill and youth, and it seems to be working.

“And the goals have come from all over the place. They’ve come from set-pieces and when we’ve put together some good periods of sustained pressure.

“We’ve tried to keep other teams on the back foot as much as possible and retain the ball for as long as we can.”

Commenting on setting players goal targets for the season, he added: “I spoke to Ben Watson the other day and he really wants to get on the scoresheet, but I said to him he is doing a superb job for us at the moment even though he hasn’t scored.

“We would like Ben to get into double figures, as we would the other strikers, and we’d also like Charlie to get into double figures this season as well.

“We’re looking for the wing-backs to get a couple and the centre-halves from free-kicks and corners.

“If you rely on one player to score 20-odd goals for you and they get injured then the wheels can fall off.”

Ayunga isn’t available for tonight’s encounter, while Davis (hamstring) faces a fitness test before kick-off.
