WINNING ugly is something Dorchester Town need to learn to do on a regular basis, especially over a “horrible” Christmas period, according to midfielder Charlie Davis.

The Magpies have a tough home tester against high-flying Chippenham Town in the Evo-Stik Southern Premier Division at the Avenue tomorrow (3pm), a side they have already beaten in the FA Trophy at home this term.

Davis, who played 90 minutes against the Bluebirds on that occasion, told Echosport: “Everyone is focused on this Saturday because last week’s result was not good enough.

“It’s a game that we think we can win and, obviously, we beat them previously this year at home in the Trophy as well.

“I think we will go into it very happy knowing we have done the job against them before.”

Chippenham are currently the nearest challengers to runaway league leaders Poole Town at present but that doesn’t bother Davis, who insists the Magpies are better against sides who possess talent.

He added: “When we play against teams that have quality and can play I think we can match them, it’s just that other side in doing the nasty bits enough in a game to get a win.

“We were playing good football on nice pitches and in nice weather. It’s just a case of rolling up our sleeves now and showing we can win ugly – which we have done in the past.

“It’s just something we need to do week in and week out.”

Looking further ahead over the festive fixture list, Davis admits that doing a league double over arch-rivals Weymouth on Boxing Day would be “massive”, but is doing his best not to think about that just yet.

He said: “You don’t need to speak about the game at Weymouth to know people are excited.

“To do the double over them on Boxing Day at Weymouth would be massive.”

On the Christmas schedule, he added: “As much as you love football it is a horrible period. You have games coming thick and fast and the weather is never nice over the period.

“Sometimes it’s not pretty for the fans but you need to go and get points.”
