MIDFIELDER Franklyn Clarke is set to make a big decision about his future as he prepares to welcome his new daughter into the world next week.

The midfielder, who became an integral part of the Magpies’ squad after signing from Wimborne Town in December, has been in talks with the coaching staff at the Avenue since March as both parties look to agree a new deal.

However, Clarke is still yet to commit his future to Dorchester, or any other club, and is putting his family ahead of any decisions about next season.

He told Echosport: “I’ve had conversations with Dorchester and Mark (Jermyn, manager) since March to talk over a possible contract.

“We’ve had more conversations recently about re-signing but I’ve got other things to be focusing on.

“My daughter is my main priority at the moment, she’s here next week, so we’re getting everything ready for her.

“I’m keeping myself as fit as I can be for next season as football is still one of my top

priorities.”

Asked whether he will be training with Dorchester once pre-season starts next week, the midfielder said: “I’ve had conversations elsewhere, so it’s just about making the right decision year after year.

“It’s a massive year for me football-wise so I want to make sure that I make the decision that allows me to push on and

develop.

“It’s got to be right before I commit to anything.”

Magpies’ boss Mark Jermyn feels the midfielder is not after any financial gain and instead wants to play at the highest level possible.

Jermyn added: “Frankie did extremely well for us last season and he is a pleasure to work with.

“At the moment we’ve made him an offer to try and keep him but as with the other young lads that we had in last season, they’ve had good offers from elsewhere.

“For Frankie I don’t think it’s about money, it is really about playing the highest level of football he can at a competitive level. It’s not a money thing at all.

“He’s had some good offers from other clubs and I think he’s taking his time to see whether they fit with his personal and professional life. He’s exploring all of his options.”

Asked what he thought the chances were of Clarke staying with the Magpies, Jermyn replied: “At this time I’d say they were very slim.

“That’s no detriment to Frankie or on our part. Both parties have worked hard to make sure it is good for the club and good for the player.

“He just wants to play as high as can and he has some undeniably good offers.

“We just have to wait and see what happens.”

Jermyn will be hopeful Clarke makes a decision before pre-season, which starts next week – around the same time as Clarke’s daughter’s scheduled birth – with their first friendly against Yeovil Town on Tuesday, July 12 at the Avenue.
