KYLE Critchell’s first half showing against Yeovil Town will be his last in a Magpies’ shirt as manager Mark Jermyn revealed the defender had decided to stop his trial at the Avenue due to fitness concerns.

Critchell has been without a club since leaving Portland United last season and had been training with the county town side since the start of pre-season.

However, after the 1-0 defeat to the Glovers, Critchell informed the boss he was unable to carry on.

Jermyn explained: “Unfortunately that will probably be the last we see of Kyle (Critchell).

“Because of his troubles of fitness over the last couple of years, the level of training has taken its toll on him at this early stage. He text me and said he won’t be able to commit to the season. It is a shame.

“He felt he couldn’t do any more than he had already done.”

This leaves the Magpies looking elsewhere for a right back – the position Critchell filled on Tuesday night – but Jermyn feels that the replacement can come from within the group.

Asked whether he is on the lookout for a new defender, he responded: “I think that Ben Walker, when he played there in the second half, built on what he showed us last season and we were looking to keep him.

“To be honest, there wasn’t much between them anyway. They both had different attributes, but it now looks like he will be our first choice.”

Dorchester are set to take on Sydenhams Wessex League outfit Blackfield & Langley tomorrow (3pm) as they step up their preparations for the new Evo-Stik Souther Premier League campaign, which sees their fixtures released today.

Jermyn is expected to make changes to his side, giving the six trialists as well as the returning Mario Mateus a run out.

He added: “We will name a different side. Mario will be back with us tomorrow and it will be great to see him on the pitch.

“We’re going to give them (the trialists) a couple of weeks to show us what they have got.

“We’re going to have a small squad and we will spend the next few games whittling the side down.

“We don’t want to waste anyone’s time and we don’t want them to waste ours.”

After their first game, the only injury worry was Nick Swann who limped off after an hour, but the manager confirmed the midfielder showed no ill effects after the game.

He said: “Nick really enjoyed the match and he will be fit for Saturday, the rest of the squad had no complaints so we have a full set of players for the game.

“We will be trying some different things against Blackfield & Langley. They are a strong side who are aiming for the league title but we need to change tactics and be able to do that.

“We have to make sure we manage it properly.”

After tomorrow’s game, the Magpies will welcome Brighton & Hove Albion Under-21s to the Avenue on Wednesday (7.45pm).
